THE BOSCH

Jheronimus van Aken (Bolduque, c. 1450-1516), familiarly known as Joen and known as Jheronimus Bosch or Hieronymus Bosch, in Spain the Bosco, was a painter born north of the Duchy of Brabant, in the current Netherlands, author of an exceptional work as much for the extraordinary invention of his figurations and the subjects treated as for his technique, which Erwin Panofsky described as a "distant and inaccessible" artist within the tradition of Flemish painting to which he belongs.

El Bosco did not date any of his paintings and there are relatively few who carry a signature that may have no apocryphal. What is known about his life and his family comes from the few references that appear in the municipal archives of Bolduque and, especially, in the account books of the brotherhood of Our Lady, of which he was a sworn member. Of his artistic activity, only some minor works are not preserved and the commission of a Final Judgment that in 1504 Felipe el Hermoso made him. From none of the works that are currently attributed to him has the documentation produced in the painter's life arrived and the characteristics of his unique style have been specifically determined from a small number of controlled works in literary sources, all of them later to the death of the painter and, in some cases, of complicated doubtful, not to distinguish very early the works of the Bosco of the imitators.
The Bosco acquired fame still alive as an inventor of wonderful figures and images full of fantasy and it was not long before fans and counterfeiters came out that would make their themes and imaginations a true artistic genre, also disseminated through prints - many of them signed by Hieronymus Cock— and embroidered tapestries in Brussels.
